Born in 1689, Samuel “Black Sam” Bellamy began his seafaring life in the Royal Navy before becoming the wealthiest pirate in recorded history, amassing his fortune by capturing over 53 merchant ships. In early 1717, his ship, the Whydah Gally, was caught in a violent storm off the coast of Massachusetts and sank, claiming the lives of all aboard. The wreck was discovered in 1984, making it the first authenticated pirate shipwreck found in North America.
